The University of Kashmir (KU) has officially announced that the winter vacation will commence from January 10, 2026, bringing clarity to students and faculty members after days of speculation.
Confirming the development, Registrar of the University of Kashmir, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, told news agency JKNS that the winter break will remain in force from January 10 to February 22, 2026.
The announcement comes later than usual, as the university traditionally begins its winter vacation from January 1 every year.
Why Was the Winter Vacation Announcement Delayed?
According to official sources, the delay in announcing the winter vacation was primarily due to the university’s plan to hold the annual convocation before declaring the break.
Sources said the convocation was tentatively scheduled for the last week of December, and the administration wanted to complete the ceremony before sending students and staff on winter leave. However, the event could not be held due to pending official-level issues, resulting in the postponement of both the convocation and the vacation announcement.
Convocation Status Still Unclear
When asked about the status of the University of Kashmir Convocation, Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal said that no final decision has been taken so far.
“The University is yet to take a final decision regarding the Convocation,” the Registrar said.
This uncertainty has left students—especially final-year and passed-out candidates—awaiting clarity on whether the convocation will be held before or after the winter break.

Students React to Delayed Announcement
The delayed announcement of the winter vacation led to confusion among students, especially those planning to travel outside the Valley or return to their hometowns.
Several students said that late confirmation disrupted travel plans, as tickets and accommodations are usually booked well in advance during the winter season.

However, with the dates now officially confirmed, students and faculty members can finally plan their schedules accordingly.
