J&K Adds 340 MBBS, 128 PG Seats; 594 Lecturers, 480 Doctors’ Posts Referred to JKPSC

The Jammu and Kashmir Government has increased 340 MBBS seats and 128 Postgraduate (PG) seats in various medical colleges across the Union Territory and referred 594 posts of lecturers and 480 posts of Medical Officers to the J&K Public Service Commission (JKPSC), Minister Sakina Itoo informed the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Replying to the discussion on grants of the Education, Health & Medical Education and Social Welfare Departments, the Minister said the government is expanding medical infrastructure, diagnostic services and emergency healthcare facilities. She also announced that a comprehensive cancer control strategy, in collaboration with NITI Aayog and ICMR, will be rolled out soon, along with a Cervical Cancer Vaccination drive for girls aged 9–15 years.

Sakina said 594 lecturer posts are in the final stage of selection, while 727 non-teaching posts and 43 MTS posts are also slated for recruitment. In the health sector, she said 480 Medical Officer posts have been referred to JKPSC, 582 paramedical posts to JKSSB, and 468 Medical Officers have been appointed in the last 1.5 years.

She informed the House that major hospital projects are underway, including new bedded facilities at GMC Jammu, GMC Bemina, LD Hospital, SMHS Hospital and GMC Srinagar, and that 44 Advanced Life Support ambulanceshave been added, taking the total fleet to 533.

On education reforms, the Minister said restoration of the academic session has improved results, with government schools recording 80% pass in Class 10, 84% in Class 12 and 83% in Class 11 in winter zones. She also highlighted progress in higher education infrastructure, Anganwadi upgrades, and drug de-addiction programmes, noting that 2,006 Panchayats in J&K have been declared TB-free.

The Assembly later passed the grants for the concerned departments through a voice vote.
