In a landmark development for the education sector in Kashmir, Srinagar is set to receive its first state-of-the-art school dedicated exclusively to specially-abled children.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Akshay Labroo, announced that the institution, named “Abhinandan School,” will be a unique facility designed specifically for children with visual and hearing disabilities.1 This school will be the only one of its kind in the region and will cater to the needs of specially-abled children from across the entire Kashmir division.

Speaking to the media, DC Labroo described the Abhinandan School as a “major and special project” for the district.

Implementation: The project is being spearheaded by the Social Welfare Department, which is currently implementing several key projects in the district, including the Palash and Parisha special schools.

To ensure the project meets the highest standards, multiple departments—including R&B, Power, Water, Revenue, Police, Planning, and Social Welfare—are working in close coordination.
Deadline: The official deadline for the project is 2027.
Early Completion: The administration is making concerted efforts to complete the school before the deadline while maintaining a strict focus on quality.
Priorities for 2026: Infrastructure & Connectivity
Discussing the administrative roadmap for the upcoming year, the Deputy Commissioner outlined the key priorities for 2026:
Completion of Projects: The primary focus will remain on completing all sanctioned projects in Srinagar. DC Labroo emphasized that projects with approved funds must not be stalled midway.
Urban Development: The administration will focus on last-mile connectivity, traffic decongestion, and ensuring the optimal use of land free from encroachments.
Social Welfare Upgrades: Recent upgrades have already addressed needs related to education, sports, and health camps for the specially-abled community.
Advisory on Fire Safety
During the interaction, DC Labroo also expressed concern over the rising number of fire incidents in Srinagar city. He issued a strong advisory to residents:
Electrical Audit: Residents are urged to get their electrical appliances audited and ensure that their electrical load matches their usage to prevent short circuits.
Precautions: He warned against the careless use of electrical equipment and advised against keeping dry grass near homes, which increases fire risk.
